By the Students, For the Students

In Room 309 at the Towson University Union lies the office of the Towson Towerlight, a group of student journalists who work hard to emulate a modern professional newspaper, all while gaining new experience and knowledge.

On Monday, September 10, the Towerlight held a fall open house. During this, interested students were able to enter the Towerlight office, apply for a spot on the paper, and speak with current staff members.

When it is stated that the Towerlight is by the students, it truly is by the students. “The Towerlight operates on campus and exclusively employs Towson students and alumni but is independent of the University.”, as claimed on the Towerlight website, thetowerlight.com.

This student newspaper is completely different from typical school news media because it is not funded by the school. The Towerlight is an independent group, yet Towson students are aware of the existence of the organization, and their papers can be seen all throughout campus.

The newspaper is unique in that people who are not even employed can contribute to what is distributed through the paper. “We make sure students are aware of what’s happening around Towson, but also give students a platform to let people know what’s happening.”, said Kerry Ingram, the Towerlight’s Arts & Life Editor.

The Towerlight’s open house ran from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and food and drinks were supplied to those who came, along with application forms. The staff were cordial and helpful and were willing to answer any questions that potential applicants had about working for the paper.

If you are interested in applying for a spot at the Towerlight, visit the paper’s office at Room 309 in the University Union, or email the editor-in-chief, Karuga Koinange, at editor@thetowerlight.com.
